Shipping the GSA

Today, is Tuesday, June 16 2015 and things are starting to get real about our travel to Iceland as we had to drop our bike in the logistics depot.

We analyzed different options on what would be the best way to get to Iceland together with our motorcycle:

(i) Riding from Lisbon to Denmark and catch the ferry to Iceland

(ii) We travel by plane and send the bike by plane

(iii) we travel by plane and sending the bike by road and ship

(iv) We travel by plane and renting the bike in Iceland

In the end we decided that the most suitable and most affordable option for us was (iii). The only issue with this option is that we will not have bike for 2 weeks before we leave and 2 weeks after we come back. But we felt that it was worth that sacrifice for having our own bike in Iceland, which we are very familiar with and has heated gear ;-).

Last night we spent some time deciding what would go on the bike and what we would take with us on the plane. We decided to send the bike day trip clothes with the bike whereas the evening clothes we would take on the plane. We also decided to take the helmets on the plane with us.

The company we chose to ship our bike is Savino Del Bene. So far I have been very happy with the service from Diogo Reis who is their Branch Manager in Portugal and the people I have met so far.

The bike will be taken in a van (who happens to be driven by two Polish young men) to Rotterdam where it will be loaded on a ship and hopefully meet us in Reykjavik beginning of July 2015.

So today I rode it to Lisbon and Paula followed me and we left it at the logistics depot.

Here are some pics of the bike ready to be put on the crate and of the logistics denter and the Polish van on the background.

Later on in the day, Diogo sent me pics of the bike already on the crate and on the van.
