Communications in Iceland

One of the things that most amazed us about Iceland was the level of communications.

Anywhere we went, and believe me, we went to some isolated places (for example we rode a road that in 24 hours less than 100 cars had passed), we had wireless communication. Most of the time this was 3G and pretty decent speed that  we could do video but in case that was not available, "edge or advanced 2G" was available for voice communication. I know this is an island and it does not have many trees and that majority of people live by the coast (where we travelled) but still I was pretty amazed.

Also learned that 95% of homes in Iceland have Internet access which probably makes it #1 in the world.

And we were also very pleased with wifi support. Every hotel/guesthouse where we stayed had pretty good wifi and it was free, but even more impressive is that every little restaurant also had free wifi support.

This all meant that we could be connected to our friends and family everywhere we went and we never felt unsafe because we knew we could always call in for help.

One more interesting information, in Iceland they have an app (112 Iceland) that you can log in your GPS location whenever you arrive somewhere, so that the emergency authorities can use to track you in case of an emergency. You can also send an emergency message and a GPS signal will be sent to the authorities for emergency rescue.

Nicely done ...
