Day 8 - Dimmuborgir

We were still in Reykjavik and we met a young couple and all he told us a place not to miss while in Lake Myvatn was Dimmuborgir.

Dimmuborgir (dimmu "dark", borgir "cities"or "forts", "castles") is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields. It is composed of various volcanic caves and rock formations, reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel. The dramatic structures are one of Iceland's most popular natural tourist attractions.

Most sites in Iceland have explanation in English at the sight. Most of the time we had already read about the site on the Internet but in this case we spend some time getting familiarized with the site and the different options to visit.

We did not have much time and stayed about 45 minutes in the site where we walked around and were impressed by how the rock formations look.

Later on we read that In Icelandic folklore, Dimmuborgir is said to connect earth with the infernal regions. In Nordic Christian lore, it is also said that Dimmuborgir is the place where Satan landed when he was cast from the heavens and created the apparent "Helvetes katakomber" which is Norwegian for "The Catacombs of Hell".

As we did not know any of this before we visited we were quite relaxed and walked around and took lots of pictures which reminds me of a saying

"Not knowing anything is the sweetest life." - Sophocles
