Day 8 - The Beauty and The Beast

Waterfalls are very prevalent in Iceland. The very tall mountains that gather snow and turns into ice during the winter starts melting during the summer and that makes it ideal for waterfall creation.

There are a number of well known waterfalls in Iceland and we have seen some of them. Two of them are very close to each other, around the Lake Myvatn area and they are very beautiful. At the same time they have become known as The Beauty and The Beast.

We had an opportunity to see both of them and here are some pics and information about these two impressive waterfalls.

The Beauty - Godafoss

The Goðafoss (Icelandic: waterfall of the gods or waterfall of the goði) is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. It is located in the Bárðardalur district of North-Central Iceland at the beginning of the Sprengisandur highland road. The water of the river Skjálfandafljót falls from a height of 12 meter.

We visited it already towards the later part of the day. Although not very big it is just a very beautiful fall. Everything seems to be so symmetric.

The Beast - Dettifoss

Dettifoss is situated on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier and collects water from a large area in Northeast Iceland. The falls are 100 metres (330 ft) wide and have a drop of 45 metres (150 ft) down to the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. It is the largest waterfall in Iceland in terms of volume discharge, having an average water flow of 193 m3/s and reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe.

I was able to walk very close to the water just before it comes down and after jumping some rocks was "in the water". The sound was tremendous ...

Over in the distance others made their way to find different places to look at such an amazing sight ...

Fittingly, would like to terminate this post with a quote from Howard Ashman, Beauty and the Beast:

"I want adventure in the great wide somewhere.

I want it more than I can tell.

And for once it might be grand

To have someone understand

I want so much more than they’ve got planned…"
